One day while I was working at the US Consulate in Sydney, Australia I got a call from a woman from Iowa who was visiting Sydney and doing some research on business opportunities in Australia. As we talked, it turned out that she was a best friend of my old boss (one my dearest friends and mentors) back in Des Moines, Iowa. Of course, you can imagine our surprise when we discovered we had a mutual friend on the other side of the world. After I returned to Iowa, we reconnected at our friend’s wedding five years later and are still in touch to this day. I’ve always wondered if our paths ever would’ve crossed if my Australia co-worker had answered her call instead….
